Surface

Surface is an ongoing project and a tactile exploration of the ground beneath us.

We rarely make contact with the ground outside our homes with our bare feet beyond trips to the beach or a foray onto cut grass in summer. For much of our lives we are shielded from the surfaces below us by footwear, a sign of our ‘civilisation’ and something which has in many cases become an object of desire and prestige in itself.

The ground is seen as dirty and dangerous, and to our over-protected soft feet it is to some extent. The surface project is a series of short bare-foot walks in urban areas with photographs taken every 100 steps, the documentation of which aims to convey the sense of touch to the viewer, but also to focus upon the often overlooked details around us: vivid graphics of road markings, discarded objects giving clues about their owners and moss in the cracks of paving for example.
